Tussaint L'overture (Ryan Teng)

Ah yes, the Haitian Revolution. You know, back in the day they called the land St. Dominique? Those were the days when I was young and still an oppressed slave. Those days were terrible. They had us working under the hot sun everyday, no breaks, no drinks, and no rights. Every time somebody stepped out of line, they pulled out the whips. I actually participated in a civil rights movement for the ban of whips back before the days of the revolution.
Ahh there I go again, trailing off like the old man I am. You have no idea what dying in prison can do to a man. Always so cold and stony...
Anyway, back on the topic at hand, the Haitian Revolution was a bloody one. Not only were the slaves involved, but France, Spain, and Britain were too. It was a long 13 years of fighting, first it was white colonists against France, then it was slaves against whites, then Spain decided to get involved and it was slaves against Spain, France against slaves, and France against Spain. At some point in the midst of fighting, I switched over to the Spanish side of war and fought with the slaves against France. Then Britain decided to get involved! So then it was France vs. Spain, slaves, and Britain. So then France got worried, and decided to free the slaves, so I joined their side again. So after all this fighting, the slaves are fighting with the French against the Spanish and the British. After 13 years of war, it was over. We were triumphant. That is, until Napoleon got involved...

Now consider this, what gave you the right to revolt in the first place? Who gave you the right to murder in the name of your freedom? What puts your needs and whats over everyone else's? You see your quest for liberty was misguided and a selfish attempt to move yourselves forward while pushing the others down. A disgraceful tactic my "sir".

Who said that these murders were unjust! I may have spelt my name wrong above but, that does not mean we do not have the right to revolt! If you mean by selfish, Hobbes, I do hope you mean the fight for the abolition of slavery in Haiti and in every other nation. You yourself would know that through revolution there will be sacrifices. These sacrifices however, are almost certainly for the better!

My dear Hobbes, how can you criticize their actions like so? Oppression forced them to such desperate measures. Enslavement over their lives led to long hours of farming their prized sugarcane, then shipped to other major countries for France's profit. Before we intervened, the Haitians were isolated and peaceful. It is not their fault for wanting to bring their lives back to the way they were before, but ours! If you were stripped of your freedom to roam the country and spread your ideals, and found no way to convince others to return that freedom to you, even one such as yourself would have to consider revolution.
